Visit Sri Aman Sarawak - The Town of Bujang Senang and Tidal Wave

The Sri Aman Division is one of the eleven administrative divisions in Sarawak, east Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. Formerly part of the second Division, Sri Aman Division has a total area of 5,466.7 square kilometers.

It was formerly known as Simanggang District but was later name as Sri Aman as this is the place where PARAKU(Parti Rakyat Kalimantan Utara) a communist party operated in Borneo particularly Sarawak signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Sarawak government in year 1973. PARAKU was represented by its Commander BONG KEE CHOK whereas Sarawak government by its Chief Minister at that time Abdul Rahman Yaakob (different from Tunku Abdul Rahman). Sri Aman was chosen where "Aman" means peacefulness. Sri Aman brings the meaning of "Town of peace" and therefore pigeons became the symbol of Sri Aman as pigeons symbolized peacefulness.

Sri Aman town is one of the most crime free town in Malaysia. Its crime rate is among the lowest in Malaysia. For those who wants to visit Sri Aman, the population of Sri Aman who is culturally mixed, with mostly Iban, Malay and Chinese predominating would be very happy to welcome you all to their peaceful and beautiful town.

Down memory lane - The only theatre in Sri Aman. In early 70's when Hindustan movie was very popular among local the theatre was at it peaks and alway full of hindustani movie goers. But in early 90's due to tough competition with mini theatre and the LCD player, the theatre was closed and since then it was converted to commercial centre.

Benak Of Batang Lupar

One of the main tourist main attraction to Sri Aman or Batang Lupar great river is a Tidal Bore or known as Benak by local Iban or Malay.

The benak of the Batang Lupar first becomes visible in the estuary region of Pulau Seduku. It reaches its peak as it passes the town of Sri Aman, 90km from the estuary. Along the banks of the town a tidal watching festival was inaugurated on the King Tide of 5th May 2001 - the Pesta Benak. This gave the local boatmen an opportunity to show their skills to tourists, surfing the bore in longboats. Prior to the event, several days were spent flushing crocodiles out of the river for the safety of tourists!

The benak continues its journey another 30km inland, ending near the small village of Engkilili.

For those who would like to see Batang Lupar Tidar Bore or Benak the best time for you to see benak is in month of May.

Welcome to Sri Aman the city of Bujang Senang and Benak...

Visit Sri Aman-The City Of Bujang Senang and Tidal Bore

Sri Aman is located 175km north of Kuching, the capital City of Sarawak. It is known of its popular Batang Lupar river – the house for the giant legendary crocodile known as Bujang Senang or literary translate as the “Easy Warrior”, and the mighty tidal wave or known as “Benak” by the local people. There is a lot of popular tourist attractions in Sri Aman, but today I am going to introduce this interesting place, the Tapang Rumput picnic spot.

Tapang Rumput is located at 35km Sri Aman-Kuching Road. This Notice Board can be seen clearly showing the direction of the reacreation spot. Some of the nice spots for bathing - clear spring water that flows from Kelingkang Range, the longest range in Borneo and International Boarder for Indonesia-Malaysia/Sarawak.

The facilities available at Rumput Tapang - Public Toilet and enough space for car park.

Due to lacking of promotion by the local authorithy (Sri Aman City Council) that manage the recreation spot, not many visitors came to visit the place

For those who would like to feel the cool spring water from the heart of Borneo, Tapang Rumput is the best Recreation spot for you

"Welcome to Sri Aman"!
